UNIC Manila launches the 2010 World Investment Report
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Manila, in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) based in Geneva, Switzerland, is launching the World Investment Report 2010 (WIR2010) on 22 July in Makati City, Philippines.
The global policy debate on tackling climate change is no longer about whether to take action. It is now about how much action to take and which actions need to be taken – and by whom.
Fortunately, foreign direct investments (FDIs) in low-carbon businesses are growing rapidly. This growth is being driven by a number of factors, such as market and trade conditions in the home markets of transnational corporations (TNCs); incentives and trade policies supporting overseas investments in low-carbon production; and public opinion or shareholder pressure, among others.
Given this trend, the WIR 2010 looks into the pros and cons of low-carbon foreign investment for developing countries; ways to minimize the negative effects of low-carbon foreign investment; mainstreaming FDI into low-carbon development strategies; and building an interface between TNCs and local enterprises in low-carbon technology dissemination; among others.
The objective of the media launch is to use the findings/recommendations of the Report and relate them to the investment scenario, trends and developments in the country, especially in relation to the national climate change mitigation/adaptation strategy framework.
The Presentor of the Report is Prof. Jovi C. Dacanay, Economics professor at the University of Asia and the Pacific, while the reactors are Secretary Heherson Alvarez, Presidential
Adviser on Global Warming and Climate Change; Mr. Jesse Ang, Resident Representative from the International Finance Corporation; and Prof. Leonor Briones, of the UP National College of Public Administration and Governance.
Dr. Jacqueline Badcock, UN Resident Coordinator, will deliver the welcome remarks.
